Though it's never been my thing as a musician, as a listener I've been pretty into a variety of punk over the years, but it's usually the '77 London or CBGB variety, or the oddball transition kind of stuff, like the Replacements or the Minutemen. Can't say I've ever been much of an American hardcore kind of guy, though; though I do like some bands that have been labelled hardcore, it's usually the more oddball stuff from them that I like. So this was a fun challenge. Unfortunately, it's not the kinda challenge I would have wanted to dabble in while on a beach vacation, but so be it. This was a fun, albeit quick job.
I also have a contentious track record with protest songs. I like to approach politics and social commentary from a cerebral place, and most protest songs, to me, do little more than rouse the spirit while obliterating the facts and nuances of issues. How factual and nuanced can you really be in a 3-minute song? So there's that. I just tried to be as general as possible in this assignment. Sorry; I know that's not a popular view, but there it is.
Oh, and by the way, I recorded this over a base track of Corky playing drums at a Plaids sound check. I recorded it on my iPhone, and it mostly sounds like a vacuum cleaner, so most of what you hear drum-wise is programmed over it. Guitar sounds are courtesy my first amp - a Marshall Lead 20 that mostly sits in my studio collecting dust. Somehow, it seemed the right choice this week.
