about

Simple folk ditty about staring at the sun. Which I did as a kid. For real.

lyrics

Was wandering across the hill one day
Just hoping time would go by
Thought I’d see what the sun might say
If I looked him in the eye

I turned my face up toward the sun
Forced myself not to look away
Gotta let you it wasn’t much fun
Until I heard a voice say

“You can bask in my rays
Follow my path
Get yourself a tan as a matter of fact
Use my light for all of your days
But don’t try to meet my gaze”

A smarter man might have stopped right then
But I just carried on
My eyes they stung and I won’t pretend
That it was any kind of fun

But I held my own and suddenly
With a flash I could see his very face
He eyes grew dark as he scowled at me
And once more I heard him say

“You can bask in my rays
Follow my path
Get yourself a tan as a matter of fact
Use my light for all of your days
But don’t try to meet my gaze”

“Well, what you gonna do?” I said to him
“I’ve seen all that I can.”
So he shook his head and with a grin
Said, “Son, you just have seen your last”

He was right,
My eyes were fried
Such a fool was I
“Tell you what, it can return
Just tell me what you’ve learned.”

“I can bask in your rays
Follow your path
Get myself a self tan as a matter of fact
Use your light for all of my days
But don’t try to meet your gaze”
