about

When asked to write something my parents would like, I knew they would like a traditional style hymn. They are both big fans of choral music, and used to go hear Robert Shaw conduct the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus every chance they got. When first my brothers and then I joined a youth choir that performed with them, my parents were very proud, even taking me to an ASOC concert at the age of 4! Plus they have both participated in their church choir as much as possible as long as I can remember. Although I did not have time to work out proper four part harmonies, or learn the accompaniment on piano, I think this could work in a small country church or with a big chorale. The text is drawn from Ecclesiastes Chapter 1.

lyrics

As rivers ever fill the sea
Mere eyes can't see a change
The unseen hand replenishes
And it flows downhill again
The sun will rise
The sun will set
The wind blows side to side
The generations come and go
And yet the earth abides

That which was will be again
What was done will be done
Though memories will always fade
There's no new thing under the sun
The sun will rise...

I sought the answers in my toil
I gathered up the spoils
I chased wisdom madness and folly and found
There's no profit under the sun
The sun will rise...
