about

One of my favorite rock 'n roll album traditions is the concept of ending an album with a super-short, throwaway-ish tune to relax the seriousness and complexity of all that came before. "Her Majesty" and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" are two of my favorites. Our own Jerry Chapman has picked up this tradition with Life in General and his own solo work.

I wanted to do something like that. Given the assignment, the title popped immediately into my head, and I thought, well, assuming that this is the final song on an album, what if I introduced the idea of "I've been yapping at you for 45 minutes; now what do YOU think?"

As befits the concept, this is a small song of no great consequence, but I think I kinda like it, given the context. This recording, of course, is just a one-take, one-mic off-the-cuff affair, but that kinda makes sense, right?

lyrics

after all the drums and trumpets

manifestos shook and stirred
I think I’ll let you have the final word

The vested saints of yesteryear
Stone-faced at what they heard

I think I’ll let you have the final word

A smart man would see
The saint that walks in silence
A wise fool could read
the stones beneath the stream

So I will fold my drunken pages
All those sermons that I slurred

I think I’ll let you have the final word
