Another rush job, I'm afraid. I set out to write something small and sweet and poppy and maybe a bit sentimental this week. The phrase "the rose brigade" popped into my head, and I had to figure out what it meant. I had been watching Sophie play with her friends today, and I decided to write a song from the perspective of a grown-up, finding a childhood memento that reminded her of a long-gone friendship.
I'm not particularly proud of this one - particularly the lyrics - but I'm glad that I actually managed to write something other than just placeholder lyrics, for once.
lyrics
I found your book
You signed your name
Where no one would look
It all came back
The secrets shared
Your mom's Pontiac
And the heatwaves hum
Like the bass our
Heartstrings we'd strum
Your hair, in curls
The blanket tent to
Hide from the world
The songs we'd sing
Those melodies meant
Everything
How your mother called
Til the firefly evening would fall
The Rose Brigade
All those sweet soul plans that we made
Where did you go?
I guess there's just no way
To ever know
The games of chance
The crazy moves we'd
Make when we danced
The secret tongues
The air so sweet
Inside of our lungs
All those words
We knew
Only meant for me and for you
The Rose Brigade
All those sweet soul plans that we made
Where did you go?
I guess there's just no way
To ever know
