I think I've decided that for the rest of this round, I'm just going to listen to Gillian Welch and read Flannery O'Connor. This isn't quite THAT, but it's partway down the path.
Anyway, this is a small song, but it's probably my favorite thing I've done in a while.
lyrics
I begged the moon, I prayed the stars
I drank so deep, can’t get my fill
I dove the deepest reservoirs
I cast my net as far as wide
For leagues I searched, for rumors told
yet always unsatisfied
Once lost, these dreams
These lights still shine
For the ones we left behind
I saw the king’s gate, occupied
Pretenders’ fawns surround the queen
tears to diamonds where she cried
I sent my prayers to ancient gods
The hollow echoes still return
I shake my chains, against the odds
Once lost, these dreams
These lights still shine
For the ones we left behind
Long as I remember, I’ve been running
I’m running, still
But, lord I never made it
To the top of the hill
We always want whatever’s gone
But in the end, I don’t suppose
There’s any use in holding on
The things I dreamed of, as a child
The tempest tossed the seas
of young imaginations running wild
Once lost, these dreams
These lights still shine
For the ones we left behind
Long as I remember, I’ve been running
I’m running, still
But, lord I never made it
To the top of the hill
