Not the track I had hoped to write, but it's been a busy week for all of us.
Process: I picked a general theme. Watching the news, as usual, inspired me towards thoughts of vengeance and retribution for an evil man. I went and found a whole mess o' quotes on the topic.
I've been in a Gillian Welch mode lately, working on some possible Molly/Doug duets, and I just finished reading some Faulkner and am in the middle of rereading Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
So, out of all that, a vague story of cad taking advantage of an innocent young girl came about. Did he seduce her? Did he trick her into marriage? Did he steal her family property, or just her good name? Who knows? This lyric sure didn't solve those issues.
I won't go through every specific quote/reference (and some are more obvious than others, of course), but you'll find here, in order, scraps from:
- Judas Priest
- Confucius
- Jonathan Swift
- The Book of Deuteronymy
- Carly Simon
- Sir Walter Scott
I ran out of time to have Molly sing it with me, but I'm sure she would have made it purtier.
lyrics
My fingertips
run cross your lips
don’t speak, just think on how you
burned my sinking ships
Laid down my hand
raised your wedding band
This old world’s just a manacled place
I let you take command
Two graves, the damage all told
promised my mama nothing ever gets sold
Son of a bitch, with a bloodhound on your heels
your foot will slip
Gonna learn just how I feel
This land, I fear
my blood’s frontier
You probably think this tale is all
about you, don’t you, dear?
You’ve played your game
You stole my daddy’s claim
Sink down in your easy chair
My blood’s a liquid flame
Two graves, the damage all told
promised my mama nothing ever gets sold
Son of a bitch, with a bloodhound on your heels
your foot will slip
Gonna learn just how I feel
