about

Not in love with this one, but I saw it through. I took Joshua's advice and committed to a narrative, which I hope is fairly understandable now. With the new approach, it could definitely use another draft or two on some of the clunkier lines, but I kinda doubt this one will get any more attention.

Oh, and yes, I'm aware that I axed the lines that contained KG's keywords. I think that following the directions for one pass means that I met my requirement.

lyrics

move the pen to spark a chance
but these words refuse to dance
it’s been that way so long
only singing drinking songs
singing drinking songs

how you followed me so far
crossed the state in a Pullman car
in your finest muslin dress
had my doubts, I must confess
I had my doubts

if the well’s still dry by the end of spring
then there ain’t nothing left but to sell your ring
momma told me not to go but the stakes were high
and I don’t wanna see the look in her eyes
when I come back home

played apprentice, learned the ways
I knew the dangers and cliches
had a picture in my mind
it was a goal, not a warning sign
not a warning sign

it used to come for free
I thought it came from me
with the first editions bound
all those sweet temptations found
sweet temptations found

if the well’s still dry by the end of spring
then there ain’t nothing left but to sell your ring
momma told me not to go but the stakes were high
and I don’t wanna see the look in her eyes
when I come back home

what made me think I had the choice
somebody needs to hear my voice
or did I think I'd beat the odds
never feared I'd wake the gods
feared I'd wake the gods

the greatest tale I sold
was the one where you did what I told
I held you as a muse
all you ended up was used
ended up was used

if the well’s still dry by the end of spring
then there ain’t nothing left but to sell your ring
momma told me not to go but the stakes were high
and I don’t wanna see the look in her eyes
when I come back home
