For my general tastes and tendencies, we got off track a bit after the first round. I thought that Tommy's original draft had a potential for poignancy, so I went back to the source and pushed the song in a sadder, more hard-bitten direction. I probably have written too many similar songs before, and this could still use a lot of detail work, but I'm comfortable with where this is sitting right now. Thanks, Tommy; I think we've got an actual co-write on the books, now!
lyrics
I have given away what I have saved up
I have kept good advice locked inside
all those hard-bidden choices, I once made for you
seems like no matter what I’ve tried
I have always maintained best intentions
I would never make promise so cheap
I will always recall them, the steel words you swore
it’s the one thing you give away to keep
your word, your word
first sound that I heard
oh, give me your word once again
your word, your word
these lines, how they’ve blurred
break me but don’t let me bend
all that’s priceless and gold lost that shimmer
and I wonder what these diamonds are worth
now that I’ve gone and burned the one thing I earned
the only thing left on this earth
your word, your word
first sound that I heard
oh, give me your word once again
your word, your word
these lines, how they’ve blurred
break me but don’t let me bend
