He grew up in a small town in Caroline His family never had much to spare A two-room shack out by the county line He couldn’t wait to leave there He packed his bags and he gassed his car Sold his things to the local pawn He only held onto his clothes and his guitar And he hit the road at the break of dawn Goodbye Caroline I don’t miss what I left behind Hello LA I’m looking for a good time He drove until his eyes couldn’t see the lines Slept in his car behind a truck stop Told himself he'd make it, a thousand times He’d keep on going ’til he reached the top He drove down Sunset and the streets of lust Saw the signs that times were hard And the lights they sparkled like diamond dust Driving down the boulevard Hello LA What you got in store for me Hello LA Welcome to the dream factory As he left all that he knew In his rearview All he had loved before The lights came into view It was all so new It was an open door To the stars He fell in with a band who had some songs But they never saw the charts They were all feeling right, but they were wrong They weren’t stars but they played the part But still he chased the dream, as it flew It hung just outside of reach When you play the game, it plays you too There are some lessons you cannot teach Hello LA What you got in store for me Hello LA Welcome to the machinery

Streets are flooding down on Saint Nick avenue Can't even see the buildings through the haze Cabs are hard to come by, words that don’t ring true Searching for a winning card to play NY sheds a tear, try to dry her eye Let go of your fears, hold on to the night NY asks the question are we gonna be alright? NY sheds a tear, tonight Look for better angels, falling from the sky Lost in ashes burning down to dust Spirit taking over on the upper upper west Victory is something that we must NY sheds a tear, try to dry her eye Let go of your fears, hold on to the night NY asks the question are we gonna be alright? NY sheds a tear, tonight

I recall long ago in Cullowhee I found myself And I lost a few things along the way The years went by so quickly And soon it was time to go One day I’ll come back home Cullowhee I’m coming home I found a little life in Cullowhee I recall long ago in Cullowhee I was young And foolish in the best years of my life I fell in love then fell out again and ran off with some friends I made my own way for myself all about myself Cullowhee I’m coming home I found a little life in Cullowhee

v1: Nothing to lose, nothing to gain Round & round, until only the joy remains All hope is lost, all hope is found We only know it's good to be standing on solid ground pre: We sit and wait for your return v2: Before we spoke, before we lied The fire was burning so deep inside Whatever comes, whatever goes Whatever happened to the man that everybody knows pre: We sit and wait for your return ch: In Waco, TX 1948 Nothing ever happens in this God-forsaken place Until they turned out the lights and opened up the gates In Waco, TX 1948 v3: Until the last dog has his day Until the last priest & poet run out of things to say We'll count our cards, we'll count our luck We'll count out time until we realize how low that we've sunk pre: We sit and wait for your return ch: In Waco, TX 1948 Nothing ever happens in this God-forsaken place Until they turned out all the lights and opened the gates In Waco, TX 1948 Until they turned out all the lights and opened the gates In Waco, TX 1948

what makes you feel better? footprints by the door I tried to read your letter you were searching for a score With every pulse you’re feeling Don’t you hear the chords? Connections to the airwaves soldered on your circuit board and if you feel unready you’re past the point of losing better stand up steady you’ve gotta call the tune cause if it all feels heady well, you don’t know what’s coming it all goes south when you get back from Crystal City Goddamn your addiction fuck your money pose First step, did you think about Your highs and all our lows? what makes you feel better? footprints by the door I tried to read your letter you were searching for a score and if you feel unready you’re past the point of losing better stand up steady you’ve gotta call the tune cause if it all feels heady well, you don’t know what’s coming it all goes south when you get back from Crystal City

Black clouds under his fingernails whiskey sweat on his brow Someone's buried in the woods tonight Outside of Yellow Springs Etched his name on an old oak tree with his grandfather's blade where ropes would swing 'till the late 19s Outside of Yellow Springs Badges and guns tried to take the hills for a man with deep pockets shadows consume, imminent doom Outside of Yellow Springs

about

This week’s assignment, from Chris:

"This week's theme actually comes from an experience I had this week. I found an old hard drive with 15,000 songs on it from when I was in college. I hadn't listened to many of these in over a decade. One of the songs that stood out to me was "88 Seconds In Greensboro" by OMD. You can give it a spin in the references section if you're not familiar with it. But it got me thinking about other songs that have a specific city in the title. Especially those songs rich in story. That triggered this week's assignment; Writer a singer-songwriter story-teller song that has a city in the Title or Hook. See below for a list of references
