Started on Madison Avenue, Really not my scene
Took a cab to the Bowery, didn’t recognize a thing
But when I hit Central Park
That’s where she stole my heart
An then it changed in a NY minute
Never knew u til til I dropped down in it
Here in my city that never sleeps
I found my my love in the city streets
In a NY minute
We’re in it, to win it
Heard there was music in Greenpoint, blend of the old and the new
A straight up to sugar hill, saw the Apollo shining thru
And when I tried to retreat
She dropped me to my knees

you seem like a good time
my kind of sin
if you got a little time, I think I’ll
take you for a spin
I see them bright lights
and the music so loud
but every time I look
it seems I’ve lost you in the crowd
hey, where’d you go?
let’s walk the midway
love that harvest moon
you, in that cotton candy dress
I could eat you with a spoon
wait, where you going?
you got something on the side
but you'll meet me by the bandstand
and take me for a ride
you gonna show?
thought you were mine, but here’s the big surprise
them boys are always lurking in the corners of your eyes
they’re all lined up, like they're feedin’ at the trough
stop this love, I think I wanna get off
so find yourself a new game
something to do
that wheel it keeps on turning
til it brings me someone new
it’s not the first time
somebody took me for a ride
you can knock here all you want
but this car is occupied
I don’t need ya
thought you were mine, but here’s the big surprise
them boys are always lurking in the corners of your eyes
they’re all lined up, like they're feedin’ at the trough
stop this love, I think I wanna get off

This ain’t my first rodeo
I’ve been around for a while
Had my fair share
Of heartaches and smiles
But you changed me
With the sound of your voice
Yeh it’s funny
I didn’t have a choice
Used to be if I heard my name
I was in trouble
Didn’t use words to make a point
I used my knuckles
I was a fool
But now I’m changed
By the love your voice and
The way you call my name
I’ll come running every time
It’s not a question of if I’ll come
How far do I have to run?
It’s used to be bad news
When I was recognized
Told to stand up and be identified
I’d just want to get gone
Disappear and start a different life
But you put love into my name
And it helped me see
All the possibilities of what I might be
I can’t explain
But you changed me
With the sound of your voice and
The way you call my name
Now I come running every time
It’s not a question of if I’ll come
How far do I have to run?
To be there
Nothing else can compare
To the sound of your voice in a refrain
Hearing the way
You call my name
Bridge
You can never say it too much
I can never get enough
The way you call my name
Now I come running every time
It’s not a question of if I’ll come
How far do I have to run?
To be there
Nothing else can compare
To the sound of your voice in a refrain
Hearing the way
You call my name

I might be mistaken
But I feel like I hear the sound of a lonely heart breaking
Whenever I’m around you
It’s a lonesome sound somewhere between Loretta and Hank
And while we’re being frank I’ll tell you it just makes me wanna order
Another round or two
Then spin you around to that jukebox song
Forgive me if I’ve got it wrong
But I’ve just gotta say I think you belong
In the arms of a man
When the day is through
Who loves you
The way I do
I could be misperceiving
But there’s a dance a man does with his eyes when he’s been deceiving
The one he made his vows to
It’s a shift to left and then a shift to the right
Pretending not to see what’s in plain sight but I don’t have to tell you
How he’s been looking at you
We’ve all got our games we play
But darlin’ there’s a better way
Than to let your one and only life slip away
Waiting round for a man
Whose made other plans
You can wake me up if I’m dreaming
But I could swear I hear the sound of a neglected heart scheming
How to set itself free
Or maybe it’s a chorus of the angels of high
Bringing these hopeful tears to my eyes I can’t tell you
Maybe you can tell me?
If you’ll meet me here on the other side
Of that lonesome road, long and wide
I just want you to know that I can provide
The arms of a man
When the day is through
Who loves you
The way I do
I’m just a man who loves you
The way I do

v1:
Just a boy of 6 or 7, runnin' from some things he's yet to know
Lookin' for something to believe in
Searchin' for something to call his own
pre:
He had a slight inclination to go a bit too far
But he hears his mama, callin' across the yard
ch:
"When the light begins to fade, you should probably make your way
Back home, where we're all waiting for you
Your dinner is on your plate
and there's a cold glass of lemonade
and family that loves you, right & true"
v2:
Now a man, but not much older
Runnin' from the love he had at home
A constant look across his shoulder
A righteous thrill in the unknown
pre:
He had a slight inclination to go a bit too far
Scaled the highest of heights, but that's a long way to fall
ch:
"When the light begins to fade, I hope you know you can make your way
Back home, where we're all waiting for you
You know we never forgot
No matter what you might have thought
Forgiveness is healing, through & through"
br:
A long line of adventurous mistakes
Who do you call when your body & your heart completely break
You gave it all, but it wasn't enough, for heaven's sake
pre:
He had a slight inclination to go a bit too far
Then he heard his Savior, calling through the dark
ch:
"When your light begins to fade, I hope you'll find your way
to the home that was promised to you
You didn't always believe
But I'll see you on these golden streets
And watch you smile when you see that it's all true
---
When your light finally fades, I know you'll make your way
The gate is open, you can walk straight through
Lots of family & friends
and a love that will never end
A home where you'll find you're made new
---
Lots of family & friends
and a love that never ends
A home where you'll find you're made new

VY HEART
I Woke up with a heavy heart
I dreamt that we might fall apart
Worry beads tightly in my hands
And I cannot recall a single thing that’s made me dream this way something that I cannot understand
Cause I love you I will never roam
Yes I love you like a doggie loves a bone
And I love you baby don’t you know
I took a trip to Mexico
I did not want to come back home
But I got back on that plane so I could fly
And baby I just wanna cry
when I see you cast that evil eye
And I can’t understand and I don’t know why
Cause I love you I can never roam yes I love you like a cut to mercurochrome
Yes I love you baby don’t you know
Baby when I look around
Baby when I walk this town
Shops are closed or
Going out of business
I see them all come falling down
drowning on a night of frowns
Baby I just don’t know that can’t be true
I woke up with a heavy heart
Shadows shimmer in the dark
Worry beads tightly in my hands
And I cannot recall a single thing that’s made me dream this way something that I cannot understand

This week, we have none other than the Mooch himself - Tommy Jones - in the hotseat. A phenomenally talented singer, keyboardist, and songwriter, Tommy has been knee-deep in song-pitching since he was a teenager, in a variety of genres. Although fluent in a variety of styles, Tommy spends a good deal of his time these days pitching to Nashville artists. Here’s Tommy’s assignment:
"Assignment:
Write an late 80’s/90’s country smash.
Details:
Rock critics and and pseudo-sophisticated music types tend to dismiss the country genre... or even worse... wage battles in the tired argument over what makes country “real.” Somehow, however, career writers of the most prolific tier spend their entire lives dedicated to this specific field.
For these writers, country music is a two level art: 1) writing songs for public consumption and 2) tucking word play into these songs in a never ceasing game of “can you top this,” with their peers.
The 80’s and 90’s country writers focused in on the double meaning songs of their mentors and really dug deep. The hook line of a great early 90’s country song extends far beyond the title or chorus. In most cases the lyrical hook informs each verse and sprouts into other analogies throughout the track to pay itself off. In some masterfully crafted examples, the hook (and chorus) can mean completely different things throughout the song, depending on the set up of its prior verse, without changing a word from the chorus.
Your assignment is to write a hook heavy country song that places emphasis on double meanings, analogies and strong phraseology - all related to the hook itself.
The trick is to do this while pushing a narrative forward and remaining completely human.
Pay special attention to melodic hooks, narrative structure and make sense of your bridge (are you writing a bridge to reveal new information, tie the story together or as a parable telling narrator...)
Phrases, cliches and saying are your best friend. The idea is to make these sayings mean both what they traditionally mean while also meaning something entirely different. The general concept of a great country song is to take very human speech and to hide a song underneath it that explores the duality of language without alienating a typical listener.
Keep your song radio length and consider your audience.
Examples:
Two of kind working on a full house
Ocean Front Property
Fancy
Examples of what not to do:
Achy breaky heart
*Phrases, cliches and sayings are your best friends."
