Not my finest work, but the bones of something are here, I think. Written and recorded pretty much all in two hours today (busy week for all of us, I'm sure).
I wanted to get back to writing something potentially useful for the Bill Stevens/Chaisaray Schenck collaboration we've been working on, and I at least like this retro soul vibe. Lyrics were very rushed, but at least they fit Mitchell's format, I think. I suspect that I'll probably take a crack at completely rewriting the lyrics.
I also wished I'd worked harder at picking a key that would allow me to sing the chorus of this in octaves. I generally like that effect, but unfortunately, there's little to nothing left of my falsetto, so I have to pick keys carefully.
lyrics
Back on the 3:44
cold, can’t even feel anymore
I know I need this, there’s a job to be done
sometimes that New York noise just the barrel of a gun
and I ain’t got the nerve, no more
Close my eyes til Washington town
dream they turned this train back around
last stop in Trenton for a smoke on the fly
Watch those southbound trains with a tear in my eye
I know this can’t go on for long
Wheels are in motion
but my fool emotions
getting the best of me
train keep on rolling
Beyond all consoling
all the way to Brooklyn tonight
here, cause I’m in on the uptake
The pain of a Penn Station headache
Do what I got to do, don’t trust these old men
Just to count the days until I see you again
Can’t come too soon
Wheels are in motion
but my fool emotions
getting the best of me
train keep on rolling
Beyond all consoling
all the way to Brooklyn tonight
