about

Another rush job. The last of my run of songs intended as possible duets with Molly.

As per Mitchell's assignment to read a local newspaper (and presumedly, to find songwriting inspiration there within ...), I began this song thinking about the Methodist assembly this weekend, and I admitted that this song began from a knee-jerk response akin to "well, what did you expect?" I moved away from that specific current event to a more personal and somewhat vague narrative. I certainly did not get across what I meant to get across in the hour I spent working on this, but I know where I want to go with it and can hopefully come back to it.

Also, the line "this town seems so quiet out, today" was paraphrased from a local obituary in the same issue of the paper. One of the nice things about Mitchell's assignment is that it reminded me what odd and sometimes affecting writing you can find in local obituaries.

lyrics

I remember you
You’d bow your head for none
The sky you spread your wings
All golden spun
But somehow, you got gone
Left me so surprised
Threw your lot with men you
Once despised

Have you lost your voice, now?
Did you lose your say?
This town seems so quiet, out, today
Have you looked around you?
The company you keep?
They seem as bent on hell as dirt is cheap

You and I both know
The truth’s a coffin nail
And clearer heads are heard
In fairytales
Cause when you hitched your star
To such a load of fools
Why’d you think you’re judged
By different rules?

Have you lost your voice, now?
Did you lose your say?
This town seems so quiet out, today
Have you looked around you?
The company you keep?
They seem as bent on hell as dirt is cheap
