Thanks for this assignment, Anand! As a studio guy that daily finds himself living in all kinds of different musical worlds, and as a part of this writer's group, where every week brings a very different challenge, it's easy - for me, anyway! - to lose sight of my core aesthetic values. I don't think of Van Morrison for long periods of time, but in a lot of ways, his music grounds me. This song could use a lot of lyrical work, but it felt like very honest writing to me, for the most part. Musical comfort food, if you will. I think I like this one.
lyrics
If you're drowning in the backstream
Of another's fading warmth
Careful what you're dreaming
You always filled your card
With careless dancers
Thought I saw you on the landing
Between the pier lights and the night
Turning in the moon drift
Oh, I believed you
And all those careless lies
And I think of you sometimes
And if I'd known then
What you'd mean to me now
I'd have never raised my voice
So whoever you've got
In yr arms tonight
Just remember it's the dancer's choice
And if you go down south of Bay Street
You can watch the harbor lights
Dancing on the whitecaps
Alive in constant motion
And I'm hypnotized
But we never moved that way, now did we?
We stepped, tripped, stumbled through our nights
So bitter and ungraceful
You turned my blue heart black
And I burned your "sorry"'s
And I think of you sometimes
And if I'd known then
What you'd mean to me now
I'd have never raised my voice
So whoever you've got
In yr arms tonight
Just remember it's the dancer's choice
