about

This is the songwriting equivalent of getting on the green with the tee-off, and then fluffing the putt. I have had the couplet "careful where you bury me/for I may not lie still" in my notepad all round. No idea where it came from. Feels like something I would have quoted directly from somewhere, but I'm careful to give attribute, and I made no note, and I can't find it anywhere, so I guess I'll go ahead and claim ownership. It's just been sitting there. With the events of this week, the couplet stood out starkly from my idea pile.

That should have been the beginnings of a very powerful song, right there. Unfortunately, I think I chose the wrong narrative voice from that point - I went with a certain kind of archaic American oratorical voice - after a conversation with Jordan Lee last week about a scene in Inside Llewyn Davis, I could hear him excoriate me for being too "highfalutin'"! - but in retrospect, I think it was the wrong choice.

Still, this one seems worth revisiting, even if only for the subject matter and the hook couplet.

lyrics

Perseus has turned away
The Taurus makes no further claim
And here I lie in final pose
and watch you spit upon my shame

I made no call for bloodshed here
Or rallied proxies gather round
I could not see the madness grown
The fetid swamps you chose to drown

Best make sure and plant your flag
The shadow of the hill
Careful where you bury me
For I may not lie still

Did you pause to once consider
As your ran your ledgers down
Somewhere close behind those numbers
Lived the far side of the crown

The fears and flames of common hearts
The minutes hanging on the clocks
The multitudes of yearning hopes
You dashed like shells upon the rocks

Best make sure and plant your flag
The shadow of the hill
Careful where you bury me
For I may not lie still

You raised your pike from ancient score
Long forgot by all or most
And sacrificed you honor’s store
For some restless blood-mad ghost

So settle up your bounty high
as you rob the pauper’s purse
But hear me when I promise right
the beggar wears this Midas curse

Best make sure and plant your flag
The shadow of the hill
Careful where you bury me
For I may not lie still
