This song is about a large maple tree in our front yard. It's very old; maybe over 100 years. Slowly, the ivy around it has practically consumed the majority of the tree. My wife and I recently spent a couple of hours cutting mother vines, removing others and leaves as far as we could reach. Sadly, it will obviously take a lot more than what we've done to fix the issue. That stuff is resilient.
I tried to think about the perspective of the tree, within the parameters of the assignment. After another ridiculously busy week, I sat down and scribbled out another song. It didn't sound foreboding enough on the guitar, so I figured I would try it on piano. The TV was on when I walked in the door to record it. Gin quickly cut it off after she realized I was recording. I decided to keep it as future inspiration for sampling; warts and all, just like most of my MM3AM takes - especially this round.
lyrics
“Catch My Breath”
80 times around the sun
Cousins sprouted one by one
My babies never made it
Lost to the shadows or the blades
Bugs and snakes all over me
Roots kissed by Asphalt and debris
Freezing cold and burning rays
Outstretched arms to take the pain
I can't, I can't catch my breath
On my way to certain death
Lightening strikes and valley winds
Enemies I accept as friends
Bring the life I need to breathe
Spare me your sympathy
But you, slow, steady strangler
encroaching every facet like a scorned lover's anger
Take and take like vampire vines
Suffocate my precious time
I can't, I can't catch my breath
On my way to certain death
