It's 2:15am and I'm glad to be finished(ish) with the song. It started as two different songs until one sort of enveloped the other. I may go back and revisit again, but am having fun experimenting regardless.
lyrics
“The Hard Way”
The mask I wear doesn't fit like it used to before
I don it on and make my way out the door
Adjust and shift like a nervous twitch, a junkie needs a fix
And I'm just a little perplexed how bleak beneath the surface is
But I'm catching glimpses of something underneath
Every time my reflection is looking back at me
Maybe I've outgrown it, getting to know the man below it
Somehow everything is crashing in on me
If all luck is earned better believe I'll get my turn
Night and day I yearn to make up for all I've learned
I've seen the ups and downs, grateful still to be around
I'll get ahead someday even if it has to be the hard way
Always played the safe bets, staying between the lines
Sucker for contentment even if confined
But something stirs within me like fire down in a hole
Churning like the ocean go all in or fold
I'm playing with the edges and the strings
Start to feel like maybe I can breathe
Sweat beads up, I wipe my face clean
Sun shines down on me the first of what I need
If all luck is earned better believe I'll get my turn
I'll make my way across in spite of bridges burned
Change of circumstance for fortune or for chance
I'll be okay even if it has to be the hard way
