Like everyone else, I was short on time this week. Had a couple of false starts with fun ideas that I realized never would find a place in any of my current projects, so I tried, once again, to think of new angles to take the Solid Citizens, which has been a thorn in my side over the last year - I've had a really hard time writing new material for us that didn't mine the same old territory we've been in for a while. I felt like I had a breakthrough a few weeks ago with one particular song, but I've got a lot more work to do. The rhythmic challenge this week was a good excuse to get a little outside the box. Unfortunately, I didn't devote nearly enough time to the actual songwriting process. So I ended up with a track that I kind of like - something that points the way to new possibilities for the SolCits - but absolutely nothing in the way of an actual song. I often protest that I wish I'd had more time to work on lyrics, but these aren't even first-draft lyrics; these are absolutely nothing but placeholder lyrics. I'm also not entirely sure that this one doesn't veer into half-cocked Dave Matthews territory. Still, given the time I devoted to it, it could have been much worse!
lyrics
Ran to the ocean, swallowed me
Lost my devotion
Fell off the mountain, deep ravine
Lost in the counting
Dig your roots in, watch how far you reach
Rain down these blessings rain on me
Tender the coffers
Don't play so foolish, like you don't see
'Dya think you were ready?
Step on up, boy, show us what you learned
Here's the place where I get off
Going home this time
Soul and grace may cut these cloths
Roots alone make rhymes
