"17 days" was one of my favorite B-sides by Prince (think it was on the 45 of "When Doves Cry." the phrase has always stuck with me, as such a perfect amount of time for suffering.
lyrics
17 days now
I've been under lock and key
Stripped away my rank
They took it all from me
All because I put down my gun
No longer a surrogate blade
No longer a political pawn
I just pray these memories fade
17 days
Down in a hole
17 days
To save my soul
17 days
When I first signed on
I thought it was a chance
To finally see the world
A marching war dance
But when it came time
To take another life
I lay down my gun
And sheathed my knife
17 days
Down in a hole
17 days
To save my soul
17 days
The boys all caledl me yellow
And threw me in the brig
And I know I gave a vow
But I now have to renege
When I looked into the eyes
The man they called my foe
I saw he was just a man
And I held my killing blow
17 days
Down in a hole
17 days
To save my soul
17 days
That's what they don't tell you
Before they ship you off to fight
The other side has men
Who think that they are right
And really the only difference
Between you and them
Is where you come from
Or the color of your skin
17 days
Down in a hole
17 days
To save my soul
17 days
17 days now
I've been under lock and key
Stripped away my rank
They took it all from me
I just pray these memories fade
I just pray these memories fade
