I was trying to convey the emotion of several stories of families that i had read about without pandering. I was moved by the father who was trying to rebuild their home and just spent the days building and crying. but he kept going, and helped his neighbors, as well.
lyrics
I was standing at a funeral
when the rain started coming down
"just another rainy day," I told myself
and headed back to town
but the rain, it didn't stop
and the riverbanks couldn't withstand
the water spread out to the streets
taking over the land
So I packed up my family
and headed to higher ground
when I came back two days later
I was floored by what I found
there was nothing recognizable
in the place that we called home
just a ruined mess
that was everything we owned
Sometimes the worst in life
brings out our best
sometimes we show our strength
when it's put to the test
sometimes the tears get lost
in the water all around
sometimes in the depth of loss
is where our soul is found
So i'm putting it back together
with this hammer in my hand
tearing down walls and building them up
as we make another stand
but the hardest part of rebuilding
is the look in my children's eyes
losing everything they've known
in the night I hear their cries
Sometimes the worst in life
brings out our best
sometimes we show our strength
when it's put to the test
sometimes the tears get lost
in the water all around
sometimes in the depth of loss
is where our soul is found
