After the somber events that Mitchell referred to in the challenge, and after the somber song I wrote last week in the wake of those events, I wanted to write something light this week. I've been making Molly sing these dark tunes, and I wanted to give her something sweeter to sing with me.
This song started with the premise that, if I was going to have begin with Mitchell's near-death experience, I was going to start with the simplicity of the hook line of this song. From there, it grew into a song that had nothing to do with the facts of the inspirational experience. It's just a song about the necessity of hard work and sacrifice and flexibility to keep a relationship alive. The only other cock-eyed reference I made to Mitchell was the ironic reference to the lover's "angel voice."
I think I like this one!
lyrics
I learned long ago to hold my breath
for every midnight storm, the dawn still breaks
you swore that to part was worse than death
but now you just ain't giving what it takes
maybe you think we've been here before
you think you've grown tired of this duet
I saw your eyes searching for the door
but I don't think you're done with me just yet
'cause when I hear your angel voice
how I need to hear that sound
and if it's all the same to you
I'd just as soon keep you around
met an old man, smiling at his love
she still had him underneath her sway
asked him what's the trick, push comes to shove
he said, "we just fight most every day"
everybody's got their own advice
how to make their love not fade away
but there's no secret flavor in the spice
just dig your heels and go to work each day
'cause when I hear your angel voice
how I need to hear that sound
and if it's all the same to you
I'd just as soon keep you around
