Hmm ... Well, in trying to think about the intersection of what I'm trying to do musically with this shoegazer-oriented round meeting the challenge of trying to write something with a ghost-story angle, I struggled a bit. A lot of these tunes I'm working on now have long, drawn-out phrasing and low-syllable count, so it didn't seem like the proper place for narrative writing. But the sultry, ambient nature of the genre seemed to mesh well with something goth, or with the kitschy, gaudy nature of a lot of vampire-story conventions. So I ended up with a lyric that indulges in a lot of the worst cliches of melodramatic vampire writing, but it all seems to work, for what it is.
Musically, this is fairly pedestrian shoegaze, with a bit of 60's-psyche 12-strings and modal shifts.
lyrics
It’s no forever, dreamed about
lost in the rush of a crimson drought
I placed my faith in ancient curse
My lines all penned in blankest verse
The bite, the song, the stars all rain
The ecstasy, the mark of cain
The blood, the pulse, the smell of sin
I’ll never feel the sun again
These dreams of midnight, immortal
these scarlet drops of rain
as we escape through this portal
No return, the serpentine strain
I’ll never fear, I’ll never fall
A foot no further than I’d crawl
Across a desert in your name
Your flesh my god, the holy shame
As epochs fade and kingdoms crash
As hell burns heaven’s sparks to ash
I’ll pray for nothing more than this:
To twist again inside your kiss
These dreams of midnight, immortal
these scarlet drops of rain
as we escape through this portal
No return, the serpentine strain
