At night the darkness comes over you Not like a blanket, but like a deep dark shadow The stars burn bright above your head And the walls start closing in... What was That sound? An old man used to walk around back here Dirty shoes and a slight limp, greasy hair People say he lived alone, but nobody knew where I grew up here but spent my last 20 years in New York city Now that I’m back home in the dark Nights all alone and stark What was That sound? What was that sound The sound of killing What was That sound? What was that sound Bodies hit the ground Across the street I see it now The front doors open and banging in the wind With the rain I barely see anything Can’t deny it now A scream, that was definitely a scream Bloodcurdling and shrill What am I gonna do now? That the lights have gone out What was That sound? What was that sound The sound of killing What was That sound? What was that sound Bodies hit the ground Police and sirens, yellow tape and sadness Never heard what happened - I I I Moved back to the city Happier here That night still haunts me every night What was that sound? What was that sound?

v1: In the dark, you thought you'd said goodbye But it doesn't work like that And though we all live different lives Our souls will not stay trapped ------- In the light, we all have second thoughts 'Bout the things we've said and done Doesn't matter what we've been taught But when our race is run ...we all know ch: You can't outsmart a spirit You can't outrun a ghost So you might as well raise a glass and offer up a toast To the good times you remember and those that wouldn't last *The past is never dead // It's not even past* v2: Last we spoke, you let it slip In the cover of the night Something 'bout your bag of tricks and I came along for the ride ------- What's done is done, but it won't stay quiet Yesterday will have its say And it's because, not in spite Time will not be swayed ...we all know ch: You can't outsmart a spirit You can't outrun a ghost So you might as well raise a glass and offer up a toast To the good times you remember and those that wouldn't last *The past is never dead // It's not even past* v3: In the dark, you thought you'd said goodbye But it doesn't work like that ch: You can't outsmart a spirit You can't outrun a ghost So you might as well raise a glass and offer up a toast To the good times you remember and those that wouldn't last *The past is never dead // It's not even past*

It’s no forever, dreamed about lost in the rush of a crimson drought I placed my faith in ancient curse My lines all penned in blankest verse The bite, the song, the stars all rain The ecstasy, the mark of cain The blood, the pulse, the smell of sin I’ll never feel the sun again These dreams of midnight, immortal these scarlet drops of rain as we escape through this portal No return, the serpentine strain I’ll never fear, I’ll never fall A foot no further than I’d crawl Across a desert in your name Your flesh my god, the holy shame As epochs fade and kingdoms crash As hell burns heaven’s sparks to ash I’ll pray for nothing more than this: To twist again inside your kiss These dreams of midnight, immortal these scarlet drops of rain as we escape through this portal No return, the serpentine strain

She waved, I offered her a ride Way she moved, was like she could glide Quiet as the night Lonely place for a roaming child Rode the dry winter air a while Something isn’t right I heard tell of this road before Tunneled trees heather covered floor In a grove, barren white oak trees Passing by, something up her sleeve Faces bloodless white Broken glass, shining in the street Highway pass, treacherous with sleet Dimming fairy lights I heard tell of this road before Tunneled trees heather covered floor Out she flew, opening the door Scream of tires, spinning metal roar Don’t you fret it will all be over soon One more soul lighting to the moon Sweet serenity In the darkened street There she goes, silent ‘cross the leaves Annie’s road, she abandoned me Cold, quiet, goodnight

there was something on the edge of the field that night i saw it in the corner of my eye as i was closing the door of the cattle barn and the moon was hangin low in the sky then i headed on over to the house where i watched the kids playing on the floor Delores said as she went up to bed “make sure you lock the door” had a dream about my father that night his face an angry mask painted red he was coiled like the spring in his pistol it felt like he had it pointed at my head i’d wondered if those demons that haunted him everyday of his life might’ve moved along and given him peace when he crossed to the other side but the man in my dream was tormented still he was burning to settle a score he was cursing this world and everything in it as he tried to break down my door he said he would take what was his he said there would be hell to pay i woke up in the dark in a cold sweat heart beating like it wanted to escape morning came with the smell of coffee and kids voices rising up the stairs i washed the night right off my skin stepped out into the morning air the valley was awake in green and gold it was glory and peace in harmony i drove my old chevy down to the shop and billy irons came over to me he told me there been an incident last night man murdered up along the ridge they found his body buried under the leaves down at the dry creek bridge there’s not much to this story just your ordinary small town themes dancing around the old mystery of life and death and dreams

so shy but catching eyes Playful like a poltergeist new to town let me show you around outskirts to a nominal heist Cool breeze, twilight scene Shadows stretch out in epiphany Overgrown like a cold heart Dilapidated extremes Wrought iron fence screams The blissful suspense Opening An old familiar line disregard common sense Let’s go have some fun See what’s left of this dump Don’t be scared, know it well Break you out of that shell I’m just giving you hell! It’s ok to feel darkness alight Hair standing up on your neck glad to have caught your eye Moonlight ... Careful steps to the door Never know what is crawling Close your eyes across the floor Through the foyer you can see You’re not the first, I’ll be discreet You might feel a little sting Essence of this little scheme Table’s ready like it always is Shiny metals sharp and free Nobody’s ever this calm Give me a minute and you’ll see I’m just giving you hell! Anticipation’s got me burning Let’s break you out of that shell Catching eyes for a wishing well ... ... Shaking, sweating like I’ve never seen Thrown to the floor instantaneously Eyes light up yellowish-green Teeth gnashing a sacred scream Table’s turned now I’m seeing red Pouring from my soul, preying Pain piercing prophecies Leave your lips saying I’m just giving you hell! Isn’t that what you want from me? I’ll take you to eternal doom You’ll never leave this room I’m just giving you hell You took their eyes for a different view

about

This week’s challenge comes in hot from Tokyo, courtesy of Dale:

"Tell me a ghost story. Myth. Legend. Tall tale. Whatever. Give me a narrative about something that goes bump in the night. Extra points for spooky!”
