She rustled up the courage to look just one last time.
Her head was bowed, a tear streamed down her face.
She felt like breaking down, but through it all she kept on trying,
Humming to herself, Amazing Grace.
Deep inside, she knew it wasn’t fair. Fair, it seems, was not his calling card.
“Any time,” she told him, “anywhere,” “I’ll be here if things should get too hard.”
She told him years ago to walk a straight and narrow path,
But he never listened, and she knew
One day he’d surely have to face the justice system’s wrath,
And she knew that day was overdue.
Deep inside, it hurt to see him go. But she knew if he could just survive,
She’d be there to watch him, even though being there would surely change his life
If those bars could talk, they’d say, “Stay away,”
It’s not easy on your side, it’s even harder over here.
You’ve got a lot to learn, bridges to be burned,
And you know I’ve never lied,
I wish you’d stay on the outside.
Even as she told him, she knew he would end up wrong.
Boys like him don’t learn the easy way.
If she ever had his ear, it never lasted long.
She knew all was left to do was pray.
Deep inside, she felt him slip away.
He was tempted every step he took.
Even though she tried most every day,
He would never read that Holy Book.
If those bars could talk, they’d say, “Stay away,”
It’s not easy on your side, it’s even harder over here.
You’ve got a lot to learn, bridges to be burned,
And you know I’ve never lied,
I wish you’d stay on the outside.
