about

I would like to point out two moments of serendipity in this iphone demo. First, the little percussion break that comes in the beginning of the bridge section was a spontaneous inspiration from my cat Eli. He often tries to be musical, getting sounds from my guitars and keyboards, etc. He has always been this way. Since his musical efforts are almost always paired with wanting something from me (to be let outside, to be petted, or as is the case here, to be fed), I sometimes am cynical about the sincerity of his musical aspirations, like the cliche of the guy who takes up guitar only to seduce women. But here he is clearly dropping beautiful sextuplet subdivisions into my groove, at the perfect moment, adding a bit of drum-n-bass/trap flair, so I won't seem so hopelessly regressive in my musical choices, and showcasing undeniable taste, timing and technique. Second, the birds chiming in at the end forms a nice coda, adding resonance to my closing lyric.

lyrics

The Middle Ages
Situated between classical antiquity
And the modern era
A time of population decline
And counterrurbanization
Receding hairlines and peak tv

Where do we go from here
It’s a time for old beginnings
Backyard fires and singalongs

The Middle Ages
Fall colors are in style
Vikings, Magyars and Saracens
Bringing in a fresh set of sounds
Against a backdrop
Of famine, plague and war

Where do we go from here
In the cadence of the choir
Is the holy sound of the ancient melody
Decked out in the new style

The heart is locked in a wall
Like a lonely anchoress
In the many she sees but one
She rises up toward the sun

Drifts through stone and steel
Joins with the seraphim
comes down in the rain
lives again and again

In the green things that grow
Pushing up through the snow
As the crocus in the spring
And the summer dandelion
And the feathers on the breeze
In the Middle Ages
