The rule I gave myself was to write a song only with my voice, then to fill it in with instruments after I recorded the vocals. I sang the song into my phone and figured it out that way, then I didn't add instruments until I'd finished the lyrics and vocals.
lyrics
What makes a soul catch fire
Is it a broken heart
Is it the way we're wired
Are you born with the flame
or are we taught desire
I can feel it grow
Burning higher
Is it buried deep
In my bones
Can I keep it hid
is it beyond my control
Is it a choice
or a part of my soul
Can I let go?
I'm gonna break through the walls, bust down the doors
I'm climbing higher than I've been before
You will see the burns on my soul
and then you will know I have been through the fire
Can I cut it down
an instinctual voice
drums beat loud
do I have a choice
My heart is pounding
blood in my veins
is it a gift
or a ball and chain
Will I ever see
if I'm lost or found
Does it lift me up
or bring me down
Is it a joke played
by a higher power
Can I be at peace
or will it stay
until my final hour
I'm gonna break through the walls, bust down the doors
I'm climbing higher than I've been before
You will see the burns on my soul
and then you will know I have been through the fire
Take a look at my eyes, you can see the scars
A beast in a cage, breaking through the bars
Smoke through my skin, rising higher
There's no doubt I have been through the fire
