On first listen, this one doesn't sound like much of an artistic stretch; in truth, it's a bit of a Doug-by-numbers tune, though I think it's a fairly successful one: a Neil Young slow-stomp, a pinch of a nicked Dawes melody, some Jayhawks fairy-dust. I had a hard time coming up with how I wanted to honor Mitchell's assignment. But then, I had an idea.
I feel like I all-too frequently resort to block-chord blandness when plotting out new material. I've always been surrounded by inventive guitar players in my bands through the years, guys that I always wanted to leave space for to do what they do best. From Maury Botton to Michael Slawter to Lee Terry to the twin-lead-guitar team of Rick Nathey and Jack Gorham (well, you get the drift) ... these are all guys that are great at crafting hooks over meat-and-potatoes chord arrangements, so I've gotten lazy about that part of songwriting.
So, for this assignment, I challenged myself to write as a "lead" guitar player first, and I wrote from the hook up. In the end, I decide to pursue an idea that really was not particularly hooky or inventive, but the song did begin with an honest-to-goodness guitar part. So even though the results are not very unusual for me, the origins certainly were. And I think I like this one.
lyrics
as old as desert dust
sword will run to rust
before the riddle’s solving
the distance in the blood
the flicker in the flood
the mighty world’s revolving
oh, two-hearted love
you want too much
the spirit and the spark
oh, two-hearted love
for breath nor touch
to leave your light in dark
it’s Adam’s curse foretold
what you want, you’ll never hold
in the center of the starlight
the pedestal’s cold shrine
when you cross the county line
never felt the frostbite
oh, two-hearted love
you want too much
the spirit and the spark
oh, two-hearted love
for breath nor touch
to leave your light in dark
